Forklift Training Melbourne – Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does TMO offer forklift training?
No. TMO does not offer forklift training. Nor is it an RTO. The website should only be used as a resource or guide to help you identify a local Registered Training Organisation in Victoria who can provide you with training.
2. How old do I need to be to get my forklift licence?
To go for your forklift licence, you have to be 18 years or older.
3. What does LF and LO mean?
LF and LO are classes of forklift licences.
The LF Forklift Licence allows you to operate any Forklift except for an Order Picker/Stock Picker Forklift and is the most commonly obtained licence.
The LO Forklift Licence allow you to operate the Order Picker/Stock Picker type Forklift.
4. I’m from overseas and I’ve operated forklifts before in my country. I’ve even got a licence. Can I operate a forklift in Melbourne?
Overseas forklift licences are not recognised in Melbourne. If you wish to operate a Forklift in Melbourne, you will need to speak with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) who offers forklift training. Please discuss with your local RTO the appropriate steps to obtain a licence.
5. Is it ok for me to operate a Forklift at work?
In short, you can. However, you are required to be supervised at all times by someone who holds a current forklift licence. (Please speak with your local RTO.) It is recommended that you record the hours you train in a training log book for future reference.
6. How long do courses run?
RTO’s offer different courses for different competencies of students. This could include one, two, three or even five day programs dependent upon experience.
7. Where are courses located?
RTO’s providing forklift training courses are situated all over Victoria. RTO’s are also able to provide assesments onsite if requested. However, this is set to change in the future. Please contact your nearest RTO locations to find a suitable location.
8. Is it compulsory to do a refresher course prior to assesment?
Although it may not be compulsory to do a refresher forklift training course, it is important you speak with your local RTO on this issue. However, with all High risk machinery, it is important that you are competent and safe in the workplace. It is always important to keep your skills up and beyond industry standards.
9. Are trainers experienced?
All trainers who are employed by an RTO, must have the requisite skills to teach. All trainers who are employed to teach forklift training will have experience with both forklifts operation and training students.
10. How many days a week are RTO’s open?
Many RTO’s are open 6 days a week. Some may even be available 7 days. Some RTO’s may, by request, facilitate Sunday training also. For further availability please check with your local RTO.
11. What should I wear for training?
You should wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes. If you do not wear closed shoes, RTO’s will not admit you with open footwear of any kind.

13. What are the pre-requirements to do the forklift licence?
Please consult with you local RTO. Firstly, you must be at least 18 years of age. It is advisable to have a basic understanding of both written and spoken English. That way you can understand directions given to you. Finally, you will need to have 100 Points of ID for applying for your forklift licence.
